“And what is Sunday Mass if not the original Drag Brunch” Acts of Contrition is an autobiographical play by Jon Gerrard McFaulds, who shifts fluidly between narrating as himself and erupting into the fierce, unapologetic voice of his drag alter ego, Bonnie Oui Laddie.
The show chronicles the Origin Story of Bonnie Oui Laddie – my drag persona. How did a good wee Catholic Glesga boy end up being one of Spain’s power house Drag Queens? and how is it the Catholic Church’s fault?
We follow young Gerrard as he goes through the many “acts” and “drag” performances he had to put on – the pious Catholic, the straight lover, the serious teacher – all in order to hide in the closet during the 90s and early 2000s in Glasgow.
With the help of Madonna, a Zealous Nun and a dark encounter – Gerrard flees to España, running from the web of lies he’d concocted only to collide straight into the fabulous Queen he was always meant to be.
Acts of Contrition is a queer confession, dealing with overcoming Catholic guilt. a journey from shame and secrets to sequins and stardom.
